Chile has sealed its place in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup as Fernando Gonzalez saw off Dudi Sela in straight sets. Gonzalez clinched a 6-4 6-4 6-3 success in just over two hours to give the South Americans an unassailable 3-1 lead. Chile had won the first two matches of the tie, which was delayed by a day because of the massive earthquake in the country last month, with victories by Nicolas Massu and Gonzalez. Israel yesterday gave itself hope by winning the doubles, but an unlikely comeback proved beyond it. Chile will host Czech Republic, last year's runner-up, in the last eight.

Russian teenager Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova staged a brilliant comeback to win her second match of the day and land the Monterrey Open title. The 18-year-old won her first tournament on the WTA Tour by recovering from a slow start to beat second seed Daniela Hantuchova 1-6 6-1 6-0 in the final. Pavlyuchenkova, the third seed, was given a major test by Latvian Anastasija Sevastova in her semi-final, which had to be played on the same day as the final after rain washed out much of Sunday's scheduled play. She won 6-3 2-6 6-1, and then had the opportunity to rest as the doubles final took place.

Defending champions Spain advanced to the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup on Monday with victory over Switzerland. The home side took a 2-1 lead into the reverse singles and David Ferrer quickly wrapped up the tie with an easy win over Stanislas Wawrinka. Ferrer, who also won his first singles match on Friday, triumphed 6-2 6-4 6-0 to set up a quarter-final clash with France, who had already taken an unassailable 3-0 lead against Germany in Toulon on Sunday. Two other ties had also been decided with a day to spare, the Czech Republic taking a 3-0 lead over Belgium without dropping a set and Croatia beating Ecuador by the same score.

Australia will host Japan in May in the next round of the Asia Oceania Zone Group I Davis Cup following its successful tie against Taiwan which became a 5-0 clean sweep on Sunday at Margaret Court Arena. After the Aussie doubles combination of Carsten Ball and Paul Hanley sealed the deal on Saturday to hand the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead with a straight-sets win over Tsung-Hua Yang and Chu-Huan Yi, Peter Luczak and Bernard Tomic made sure Taiwan would leave these shores empty-handed in the reverse singles on Sunday.

Daniela Hantuchova booked her place in the Monterrey Open final before rain arrived to wash out the rest of the day's scheduled action. Hantuchova, 26, is seeking her first WTA Tour title since beating Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Indian Wells final three years ago. The former world No.5, who is presently 24th in the WTA rankings, dropped the first set to her fellow Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova but recovered to post a 4-6 6-3 6-0 victory. Seeded second, Hantuchova has adopted the role of tournament favourite since Serbia's former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic made a first-round exit.
